Stittsville Dental Hygienist

Dr. Sarah Fakhraldeen and the dental hygienist responsible for your care will make a thorough initial assessment and develop an oral hygiene routine that will address your current situation. This routine will take into account many variables, including but not limited to: existing restorations, health of the gums, depth of pockets around each tooth, any bleeding or sensitivity and existing conditions such as decay. Appropriate treatment and follow-up care will fall into one of the following groupings: 9 month interval, 6 month interval, 3 month interval or a short-term soft tissue management plan.

9 Month Interval

Under certain circumstances, a 9 month interval between dental hygiene appointments can be sufficient. At the very minimum, extraordinary oral health and great oral hygiene habits need to be in place for this approach to be a viable option.

6 Month Interval

In most cases where really good oral health (few restorations, no deep pockets, no bleeding of the gums, etc) and great oral hygiene are present, a 6 month interval between visits is sufficient. This allows our team to keep a close watch on your progress.

3 Month Interval

The vast majority of people need to have their regular visits scheduled every three months. The most common reason for this is the presence of periodontal disease or distress. Periodontal disease is caused by microscopic, anaerobic organisms (porphyromonas gingivalis) that have a 3 month gestation period. Once these micro-organisms mature, they begin to attack and damage the gingival and bone tissue in the area.

We are frequently asked if these three month visits are required even when exceptional oral hygiene habits are in place. The answer is, “Yes”. The anaerobic organisms thrive in the deepest parts of the pockets surrounding your teeth, well below gum lines. As a result, even the best at-home oral hygiene regimen cannot address the issue. Only your dental hygienist can easily and comfortably access the affected areas and ensure that they are treated and given ample opportunity to heal and improve.

Soft Tissue Management Plan

In cases where significant periodontal disease or damage is discovered, we will recommend participation in one of our soft tissue management programs. The programs typically start with a number of appointments scheduled in short succession. This is designed to quickly stop any further periodontal damage from taking place. Once this is accomplished, a 3 month interval program is started to help begin the path to recovery. Patients are also closely followed by Dr. Hikal to ensure that the interceptive treatment is successfully proceeding as planned.
