Inlays & Onlays Fillings Stittsville

Inlays and onlays are both of the same family of restorations with one important difference between them. Inlays are designed to fit inside the tooth’s cusps (protrusion at each corner of the tooth) while onlays completely replace or rebuild one or more of the cusps. Despite this difference in form, the goal of both restorations is to replace decayed tooth surface. Inlays and onlays become the preferred course of treatment over the common “filling” under certain circumstances such as the existence of a significant loss of tooth structure.

Historically, inlays and onlays were made of gold. Today, there are ceramic materials available that are more aesthetically pleasing (invisible) and just as durable as gold.

Affordable Dental Inlays and Onlays

Unlike traditional fillings that are done by the dentist in a single visit, inlays and onlays require two separate appointments. During the first visit at our office in Stittsville, tooth decay is removed, an impression is taken and a temporary restoration is put in place. The actual inlay or onlay is manufactured in a dental laboratory and then sent back to be cemented during a second visit to the office. The relative inconvenience of two dental appointments is far outweighed by two important advantages that inlays and onlays have over regular fillings. One is durability and the second is better protection against recurring decay (due to better fit and contact margins).
